Be willing to ditch it

It’s not easy to guess if the material is good or bad upfront. If you find it unintelligible, switch to another one. Beware that we tend to be trapped in one material especially when we purchase it because of the loss aversion; you tend to focus more on what you may lose than on what you gain. Also, be willing to skip the part of the video if they talk about something banal.

Picture Walk

Spend a few minutes to skim the video. This helps you to create the mental map before the trip. During the trip, all you have to do is just fill out the detail of the map. You’ll be surprised how efficient this is.

Speed up the video

Some video hosting services like YouTube support this feature by default. For unsupported ones, you can paste this snippet in the console.

document.getElementsByTagName("video")[0].playbackRate = 3

Use a subtitle

Empirically, reading is faster than listening. You can download the subtitle from video hosting services. For example, you can use the code below to download the subtitle from Pluralsight.

~> youtube-dl --username USERNAME --password PASSWORD --all-subs "URL" --skip-download

*You need to download youtube-dl if you haven’t done so.

Use a Q&A forum proactively

Often times, you can get answers in a Q&A forum because other people have the similar questions. Just ask in case you cannot find them. People are usually surprisingly helpful. As a bonus, you might be able to find other insightful questions you haven’t thought of. :)
